Traditional Risk Services

Traditional Risk Services has two key elements: loss prevention and loss control.

LOSS PREVENTION:
Of the two, loss prevention is by far the most important, because the best losses are the ones that never occur. Among the loss prevention services we provide are:

LOSS CONTROL:
If a loss does occur, Traditional Risk Services works to minimize the impact on campus resources and operations. This is accomplished primarily through insurance programs, which include the following:

  • Automobile Liability Self-Insurance Program (damage or loss of UC vehicles)
  • Employment Practices Liability Self-Insurance Program (lawsuits alleging wrongful termination or other employment-related actions)
  • Fine Arts Self-Insurance Program (damage or loss to paintings, statuary, rare books, etc.)
  • Foundation, Alumni, and Support Group Insurance (events held by affiliated alumni and fundraising organizations)
  • General Liability Self-Insurance Program ((damage or injury to non-UC individuals or entities)
  • Professional Medical and Hospital Liability Self-Insurance Program (liability of health and medical professionals)
  • Property Self-Insurance Program (damage or loss of UC property)
  • Recreational Sports Club Insurance (club sport activities)
  • Renters Insurance (property and liability of campus community members living in dorms or private housing)
  • Student Event Insurance (activities of Registered Student Organizations)
  • Tenant User Liability Insurance Program, or TULIP (non-campus hosts and exhibitors using campus space for events)
  • Travel Insurance (medical or other emergencies away from campus)
  • Vendor Insurance (contractors, consultants, and other service providers)
  • Watercraft Insurance (University-owned boats and ships)

Note: University Health Services administers the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and Workers' Compensation Self-Insurance Program. The Human Resources Benefits Unit handles employment-related insurance, such as health insurance and unemployment coverage.
