Students and their activities create the same risks that University employees and their activities create. The University's self-insurance programs cover the institution and employees acting within the course and scope of employment. However, they do not cover individual students, student organizations, or student activities.
Crucial distinction: if a student activity is supervised on-site by a University employee acting in the course and scope of employment, the activity becomes a University event and is covered by the University's self-insurance programs. But there may still be potential liability for the student or student organization, depending on the degree to which the student or student organization schedules, organizes, or supervises the event.
